Goats rock

Being native mountain creatures, goats love rocks! The kids are born in the spring, and
are extremely endearing. The traditional pattern of crofting in the Highlands and
Islands is that you keep your animals 'in-bye' from November to April, and put them out
on the hill from May to October. Ideally, you create winter feed - hay, silage and/or
cereals - on your fields during the summer months. This means that the farm has been basically
self-sufficient in milk and meat. Goat's milk is particularly nutritious and, sorry to
say, goat's meat is delicious - a very lean meat, similar to venison. With the right
development, it would be possible to build up a thriving business selling meat, milk,
yoghourt and cheese to local residents and restaurants.
