As well as being self-sufficient in food production, it has been the current owners'
goal to become self-reliant in fuel and energy as well. Because of its elevated
position near to the western coast, Holmisdale has an inexhaustible supply of natural
wind energy, which could easily be accessed through the installation of a suitable wind
turbine. Although this would obviously require planning permission, probably the most
efficient solution would be a turbine placed on the higher ground of Lot 2, big enough
to provide a reliable supply for all three sites in due course. Given rapidly rising
energy costs, such an initiative would likely pay for itself within ten years, and there
are attractive grants available for renewable energy schemes. It was with this in mind
that the owners installed an electric boiler for their central heating. There is also
the possibility of a hydro-electric turbine on the river, to complement the wind
turbine.
